Joseph Velasquez from Drive By Press will teach participants how to use woodblocks to print t-shirts and textiles using the new Drive By Press Gamblin Textile ink. In addition to the process of printing woodblocks, Joseph will also give a brief carving overview. A variety of carved woodblocks will be provided, but participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their own woodblocks to print. No block cutting / printmaking experience needed.

Friday, June 14, 6:30-9 p.m.: Brief lecture on history/process of Drive By Press & Printing demo (refreshments served)
Saturday, June 15, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.: Printing

Burning Bones Press

Using copper, ferric chloride and various grounds, participants will create special textures on plates. Two kinds of marbling, crackle, and spit-bite are included, as well as unusual soft ground effects. Instructor Margaret Craig is Chair of Printmaking at Southwest School of Art in San Antonio.

About Margaret Craig
Margaret Craig received a degree in Biology Secondary Education, a BS in Art and an MA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She later received an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She invented Tar Gel Pressless Etching and has demonstrated that and other techniques at SCG and MAPC conferences. She is often involved in trade portfolios and exhibits locally and nationally; recently participating in the China Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition and Symposium And the SGCI traveling members print exhibition. Currently she is Chair of Painting, Drawing and Printmaking at the Southwest School of Art and Craft in San Antonio, TX. Her original Biology degree has been a major influence in the visual and ecological context of her work, and her shop promotes a less toxic approach to printmaking.

The “Possum” may be gone, but he’s not forgotten!

During Tom Huck’s recent visit to Houston and Burning Bones Press, we commiserated about the very recent passing of the legendary George Jones. Talks had been made about collaborating on a print during Huck’s stay, and this monumental loss turned into the creation of the linocut, Possum Love, a tribute to Jones.

The print features Jones and his third wife and musical collaborator Tammy Wynette as possums on his infamous riding lawn mower.

An American printmaker best known for his large scale satirical woodcuts, Huck lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri where he runs his own press, Evil Prints. Huck is a founding member of the Outlaw Printmakers, and his work is featured in the collections of the Whitney Museum, the New York Public Library and more.

Possum Love is an edition of 81 prints to mark Jones’ passing at the age of 81. Each print is $81.  Printed image size is 9″x12″.
